In the Shadow of the Lone Cypress the reader follows Dr.Drew Duncan  as he falls in love with Florida during the Spanish American War.  He feels a strange connection with the state and her people, a connection that is hard to explain to his wealthy family and friends in Baltimore.
Duncan makes yearly visits to Miami and into the mysterious Everglades until after World War I. After the war, Duncan relocates his family to the muck lands of the newly drained Everglades. In Moore Haven, the largest town in interior south Florida, his  family put down their roots.
The Duncan family and the other residents face the joys and the  heartaches  living in  the  Okeechobee basin.
Through this historical novel, readers  will  be introduced to historical facts about Florida in the early 20th century and important people, places, and events of the time. They will also see the Florida Everglades in its pristine stage as well as the beginning of its draining and the diking of Lake Okeechobee.
